Eating Disorder Q & A

What is an eating disorder?

“Every day I looked in the mirror I see someone repulsive. No one would ever want to be with me someone as disgusting as me. I decided that if I was thinner than all the other girls I knew, people would start to see me as desirable. I stopped eating meals, only occasionally nibbling on a snack, and by the time I got treatment, I was severely malnourished.”

Eating disorders are confusing for many people. We all go through periods when we eat a too mindfulh unhealthy food. Many people even have phases in which they skip meals when they’re focused on a goal. These habits may be unhealthy, but don’t signify any deeper problem. Eating disorders, however, aren’t really about the food at all.

If you’re struggling with an eating disorder, you’ll have some understanding of this. Regulating how mindfulh you eat, as well as purging, can give you a semblance of control. Overeating can temporarily fill the hole left by loss or a lack of care. Maybe you have problems with your body image as well.

There are different types of eating disorders.

Someone with anorexia nervosa struggles with a distorted body image, believing their bodies to be repulsive or overweight even when severely underweight. While many people want to lose weight and go on restrictive diets to do so, losing weight becomes a compulsion when you’re suffering from anorexia. You are not making the choice to consume a healthier diet, but rather doing what you imagine it takes to ensure you lose weight, even if that leaves your body malnourished.

Anorexia can be dangerous, and even fatal, if left untreated. However, with treatment at Mindful Care, you will learn to see your body as it really is and make healthy choices towards living a balanced life.

If you’re suffering from bulimia nervosa, you may regularly binge on large quantities of food. However, after binging, you purge by throwing up, laxatives, or fasting for a period of time. Alternatively, you may use excessive exercise to try and rid yourself of the effects of binge eating.

Bulimia can also be dangerous or fatal. You can damage your gastrointestinal tract, or develop a range of conditions caused by malnourishment. With Mindful Care, you will return to a balanced, healthy lifestyle, with therapy, medication, and holistic lifestyle guidance.

Bing Eating Disorder

Binge eating is the most common eating disorder in the US. If you regularly binge eat, feeling unable to control yourself, you are certainly not alone. After binge eating, you may feel tremendous shame and guilt, and even revulsion.

Binge eating disorder can lead to a range of health problems, along with the difficult emotions that follow binging. At Mindful, your psychiatrist will help you explore the roots of the disorder and map out a treatment plan to put you on the path to a healthy, balanced lifestyle.

How are eating disorders treated?

Eating disorders are treated differently according to the disorder. Often, treatment needs to take into account the ill-effects of the disorder on your body. Therefore, psychiatric medication and therapies need to be provided in concord with physical treatment.
