Insomnia Q & A

What is insomnia?

Insomnia is a sleep disorder that interferes with the amount of quality sleep you get. You may have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, or you may wake up too early and not be able to get back to sleep.

You may experience acute or chronic insomnia. Acute insomnia is the occasional sleepless night caused by stress, overeating, or another short-term issue. Chronic insomnia, on the other hand, affects your sleep more than three times a week and can have widespread side effects.

For example, in addition to making you feel fatigued and sluggish during the day, chronic insomnia contributes to a wide range of health problems, including heart disease and diabetes.

What causes insomnia?

You may have insomnia for several reasons. For example, mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder all contribute to insomnia and other sleep disturbances. These conditions often cause your body to release hormones that prevent you from sleeping well.

Additionally, periods of intense stress can interfere with your sleep. If you travel a lot for work or have irregular working hours or swing shifts, you may not have regular sleep cycles. Poor sleep habits, such as using your cell phone right before bed or having a television in your bedroom, can also interfere with your sleep.

How is insomnia treated?

The insomnia doctors at Mindful Care provide a comprehensive assessment of your physical and mental health to begin your insomnia treatment online. As part of urgent care for insomnia, your provider may request blood work and other tests to identify any conditions, such as thyroid disease, that contribute to your sleeplessness.

After your initial evaluation, your provider designs a personalized treatment plan to treat your insomnia and resolve the conditions causing it. Your provider may recommend lifestyle modifications to your diet, exercise habits, and sleep habits, in addition to treating any mental or physical health conditions that contribute to your insomnia.

For example, you may benefit from practicing meditation to quiet and relax your mind and adding physical activity to your day to burn off extra energy. In some cases, your provider may prescribe medication or supplements to help you get increased high-quality sleep.
